I'm well aware that Pyromancer is after dying his hair again but I'm not worried about any of you trying to pounce on him... though he might be

By the way- there's nothing wrong with being 30 or over.

I'm not very happy about the comment about looking a 't***' in your 30's and I think both Akasha and I have proved that statement wrong on countless occasions grrr

Er...yeah

I'm 34 and don't think I look a t**t. Mind you my mother does but I think was hoping for a 'normal' daughter not a gobby goth still dying her hair purple and drawing the eyeliner round the wrinkles in her 30's!!

Who gives a flock anyway...so long as you're happy :)

I remember this. It was posted on here months ago before the board overhaul. Shame it got lost.

It was a bit of a mixed article really. It's positive sometimes but some of it is patronising and I didn't like that Gillian Porter at all. She didn't have anything positive to say and seems to be one of those "it's a phase you'll grow out of" types  and talking bullshit about how you have to be under 20 to dress gothic. What crap. As anyone who goes out in Leeds knows she's talking a load of utter wank. Plain and simple.

There's a few other similar articles to this that were published the same week:

The Independent - A nice positive and serious article that talks about how parents shouldn't worry about their kids being goth as they're more likely to knuckle down at school and get a good career rather than drop-out and get drugged up.

The BBC have also done a similar article. It's a bit sparse but includes some interviews with people in Camden Market. Be warned there's pictures.....

And finally, posted by Schmerzengel on goth.net there was an article in a Flemish newspaper called "De Morgen":

If only he'll turn Gothic

Parents who want the best for their children's future can only hope that they'll end up in the Gothic subculture, far away from the noxious popculture or, even worse, r&b. At first sight this might not appear very desirable, but a study at the University of Sussex has proven that those who hang around with Goths in their youth, have a higher risk of becoming a doctor, lawyer or architect.

The research, done by doctoral-student Dunja Brill, studied the Gothic subculture in Brighton, Edinburgh, Berlin and Keulen. It concluded that the youngsters who set themselves apart from the rest by their black clothes, vamirish look and morbid taste in music, are bourgeois deep in their heart. 'They won't like to hear me say it', declared the researcher to the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, 'but contrary to the punk movement, Goths are rooted in the middle class.'

Goths turned out, contrary to youth in other subcultures, to not fancy drugs, but to get a kick out of books. That's why, on average, they read more than other teenagers, which gives them an important advantage in communicative skills. But on top of that, Goths are much more interested in poetry, literature and arts, all qualities that could help in a professional career.

Despite all these advantages, parents are still worried when their child comes home dressed like a fallen angel. 'Many parents are worried that their children might be depressed or even suicidal when they start wearing black, but this is only seldomly the case', says Brill. 'They do have a sarcastic kind of humour that can appear rather harsh, but actually they're even very capable of expressing their emotions.'

Also when it comes to sexual morals, as a teenager you're better off in the Gothic than in whichever other subculture. With their spiked collars, chains and leather accessories they look like the whole community are followers of sadomasochism, but the research points out that, concerning the ladies, they're everything but open in their sexuality. 'Even more: most of them are firm believers in true love and romance and not at all looking for one-night stands.'

But the researcher can understand where the prejudice about Gothic teens comes from, since the killings at Columbine High School in 1999, where 12 students and a teacher were killed by two teens who were probably fans of Marilyn Manson, the world's most famous Gothic artist. 'But most of the real Gothic teens don't accept Marilyn Manson as a part of their subculture,' concluded Brill. 'Moreover, the lyrics of Marilyn and every other respected Gothic artist aren't really taken seriously.'

'Goths are not satanists', concludes Brill, 'they are intelligent youngsters who don't want to bow down to the criteria of being a teenager. And many Gothic teens stay with their ideals for the rest of their lives. They might wear less eye-catching clothes later on, have a good job, a house and even kids, but they stay true to their ideas.'

Here's some more articles on goth. This time discussing how roughly half of the teens they asked who identified with being goth had self-harmed at some point. There was some positive aspects of the article though like they pointed out it was only based on a small sample and that self-harmers should be of concern whatever social group they're from and that also young people can gain social and emotional support from being in subculture like goth.

There's so many comments on the first BBC one that I could comment on but this one in particular caught my attention:

I get accused of being a goth because of the black hair, piercings, evil demeanor etc. But i'm not a real goth (or is that the test?)- i work for the National Trust and do loads of activism with Greenpeace and other groups in my spare time. I wish other "goths" would be less mopey and apathetic and down on the world and take action to change it instead of just superficial aesthetic rebellion!
Felicity, London

mmmmm. So goths can't have worthwhile jobs or have an agenda or take any kind of action in life like volunteering for good causes and the like? It's people like this who really piss me off, stuck so far up their own arse they can't see beyond their own petty prejudices. I hate people who make assumptions that if you're into goth you're some kind of pseudo-rebel who only cares about fashion and scaring the trendies.

Goths are by no means all teenagers. They range in age from 15 to 50 and for many it is not a phase they pass through, but a way of life they incorporate into their adult identities.

Thankyou Independent. Finally someone get's it.
