A brief history of goth at the Phono
I've just been re-writing the site FAQ which contains a (long dead) link to this post from the old forum. Unfortunately I couldn't physically move the whole thread across so I'm afraid we've lost all the replies (which were fascinating in themselves with plenty of shared stories!) but here is the original tale for posterity.
(Please note that the Phono finally closed in 2005)

Found this in an old newsgroup archive (if the original author, "Fat Bob" wants it removed, email me from the Contacts page). Its actually about the Phono reopening in 1996, but its also a wonderfully piece about the Phono's glorious history. Although bits about the reopening are irrelevant now, I've reprinted the post in full out of respect for the original author:
The infamous club in Leeds, where Goth is rumoured to have reared
it's pastie face, has been purchased from the old owners by several
original customers, and an original DJ.
Marc Almond Dj'd there, on the famous tiny dance floor with the
pillar in the middle, that is rumoured to have been the begining of
the GOTH 2 STEPS FORWARDS 2 steps Backwards, (that was all that
could be done without falling off the floor ) the Phono is mentioned
in the Mission's autobiography, "Names are for tombstones" as being
together with the Faversham, "The centre of Morbid activities".
Every saturday afternoon, and evening would see The Mish in one
corner, Red lorry yellow lorry, in one corner, Lord Eldritch in the
other, and ocasionally the 3 Johns, or The Cult lads on the floor
in a pool of Puke.
The song "Alice" was written about the amphetamine fuelled,
dingy cellar, of a club known as the Phono.
There are many other legends about the phono. Too numerous to
mention here, such as the time Julie Anne Reagen, and Mick Brown
picked a fight with Eldritch and his new Goth girl freind....
The Phono is a piece of Gothic History, that is now to be put
back on the map again. The new owner is putting the dance floor
back to it's old position ( Around the pillar ), and rebuilding new
seating as it was in the early days, there will also be a small
stage for bands, in place of the old dance floor. The club is now
being run by the people who used to go there, so it will be
fantastic.
Richard plans to keep the club open 24hrs at weekends, serving as
a herbal tea/coffe/chill bar after normal licencing hours.Playing
ambient music.
The Phono has it's grand reopening night on Thursday 25th
January.
If you want to be able to say you were at the first night of the
Phono in Ten years then be there.............
Watch this space to find out which special guests will be there.
so far we have invited Wayne, Andrew, Mr Almond, Mick Brown,
The James Ray gang, we'll let you know who confirms....
